Megan's Law is named after
seven-year-old Megan Kanka,
a New Jersey girl who was raped and
killed by a twice convicted sexual offender who had moved in across the
street from the Kankas - without their
knowledge. Megan's parents embarked on a national crusade to change
federal and state laws to allow for community notification of released
sex offenders. Kentucky's version of Megan's Law went into effect on
January 15, 1999.
Kentucky's
version of Megan's Law has undergone some changes since its inception.
The changes have created a database of sexual offenders. What began as
a community notification system has evolved into an online information
source.
The Kentucky State Police now hosts the Sex Offender Registry
that lists all sex offenders that have registered in the state of
Kentucky. You may search this site by offender last name, city, county,
or a zip code. Please feel free to search this site for an offender in
your area.
